This morning in Rome the “Corte di Cassazione” has ruled that the referendum against nuclear in Italy will be held on June 12th and 13th, in spite of changes to the laws that the Berlusconi government made at the last minute in order to avoid the electoral consultation.
This does not necessarily imply that the referendum will be valid, as a majority of voters is required in order to ratify the changes to the laws proposed by the referendum committe. In Italy, in the past 16 years, there has never been a referendum which reached the “quorum” of 50% voters plus 1.
Pro-nuclear groups in Italy are advocating voters to not show up at the polling stations, in order to not reach the “quorum” or majority of voters. Questo fatto non implica che il referendum sarà necessariamente valido, dato che è comunque necessaria la maggioranza degli elettori per ratificare le modifiche di legge proposte dal comitato referendario. In Italia, nei passati 16 anni non è mai stato raggiunto il quorum del 50% di elettori più 1 per nessun referendum.
I gruppi di pro-nuclearisti italiani stanno da tempo spingendo i propri supporter a non presentarsi ai seggi elettorali, in modo da non far raggiungere il quorum della maggioranza di elettori. Le prossime due settimane saranno critiche per capire se ci sarà la possibilità che il referendum abbia successo.
