Why “Futuro Nucleare”?Perché “Futuro Nucleare”?

March 11th 2011 marked a very important day for me. It was the day in which I realized I knew far too little about energy in general, and nuclear energy in particular.

I always have been in favour of nuclear energy, but if you asked me I would not have been able to tell you the exact reason why. Maybe it’s because I have always had a strong interest in science, and I believe that technology can solve many problems that mankind has been facing.

Still, I needed an event like the eartquake in Japan to wake me up from my numbness about energy.

So I started to read, and I read a lot. I am extremely thankful to people like Rod Adams from Atomic Insights and Prof. Barry Brook from Brave New Climate, as their blogs have allowed me to learn a lot without even leaving my home. Infact I have been glued to my computer screen for many days, and as the time passed the idea that I could do something to help the pro-nuclear movement started to materialize.

Fast forward a few weeks, and I have decided to cross the ocean one more time, and I am right now in Washington, DC, just a few hours away from a very interesting conference that I will be reporting about on this new blog named “Futuro Nucleare”, nuclear future in the Italian language.

In closing this first short post, I have to write about what happened to me today, something that I believe is an amazing sign of destiny. Today infact was a very interesting day, as I visited one of the most sacred places in American history, the Arlington National Cemetery. Many great Americans are buried in Arlington, and during my visit to John Fitzgerald Kennedy memorial I thought about how this man was able to change the world by sticking to his dreams and influencing people around him in an amazing way.

On my way down from JFK’s memorial, I took the path on the left and during the walk, my attention was caught by a tombstone in a very distinctive dark-colored stone, almost black. That stone was bearing the name “Rickover” on the backside, with the mention of the wives. I could not believe what I saw, and I took courage and walked on the lawn on the front side of the tomb, and shot this picture:

I believe in signs, and I think this is a sign. Like JFK did, Admiral Rickover was able to change the world by sticking to his dreams and influencing people around him in an amazing way.

Futuro Nucleare was officialy born today, May 22nd 2011.L’11 Marzo 2011 é stato per me un giorno molto importante. É stato il giorno in cui ho capito che sapevo davvero troppo poco di energia in generale, e di energia nucleare in particolare.

Io sono da sempre stato in favore dell’energia nucleare, ma se mi fosse stato chiesto il perché non sarei stato in grado di dirlo con precisione. Forse il motivo sta nel fatto che io sono sempre stato molto interessato nelle scienze, e credo che la tecnologia  possa risolvere tanti problemi che l’umanità si trova ad affrontare.

Comunque, ho avuto bisogno di un evento come il terremoto in Giappone per svegliarmi dal mio torpore sull’energia.

Ho quindi iniziato a leggere, e ho letto molto. Sono estremamente grato a persone come Rod Adams di Atomic Insights e il Prof. Barry Brook di Brave New Climate, i cui blog mi hanno permesso di imparare molto senza nemmeno dover uscire di casa. Sono stato infatti incollato allo schermo del mio computer per svariati giorni, e man mano che il tempo passava l’idea che io potessi fare qualcosa per aiutare il movimento pro-nucleare ha iniziato a materializzarsi.

Andando avanti di qualche settimana, ho deciso di scavalcare l’oceano per un’ennesima volta, e in questo momento mi trovo a Washington, Distretto di Columbia, a distanza di poche ore da una conferenza molto interessante della quale parlerò su questo mio nuovo blog dal nome “Futuro Nucleare”.

Per chiudere questo mio primo breve articolo, devo scrivere cosa mi é capitato oggi, una cosa che io credo essere un incredibile segno del destino. Oggi infatti é stata per me una giornata molto interessante, in cui ho visitato uno dei posti più sacri della storia Americana, il Cimitero Nazionale di Arlington. Molti grandi Americani riposano ad Arlington, e durante la mia visita al memoriale di John Fitzgerald Kennedy ho riflettuto su come questo uomo é stato in grado di cambiare il mondo rimanendo fedele ai suoi sogni ed influenzando le persone intorno a sé in maniera incredibile.

Per scendere dal memoriale di JFK ho preso il cammino sulla sinistra, e durante la camminata, la mia attenzione é stata catturata da una tomba di una pietra di colore scuro, quasi nera. Questa pietra riportava il nome “Rickover” sul retro, con la menzione dei nomi delle mogli. Non potevo credere in ciò che avevo visto, mi sono fatto coraggio e ho camminato sul prato fino ad essere davanti alla tomba, e ho scattato questa fotografia:

Io credo nei segni, e questo é un segno del destino. Come fece JFK, l’Ammiraglio Rickover é stato in grado di cambiare il mondo rimanendo fedele ai suoi sogni ed influenzando le persone intorno a sé in maniera incredibile.

“Futuro Nucleare” é ufficialmente nato oggi, 22 Maggio 2011.
